Learn the two shapes that cover most sets
The overwhelming majority of flat panel televisions use either a figure-eight connector, formally C7, or its polarised variant C8 where one side is squared off. A C7 cord will not sit properly in a C8 socket. Look at the socket on the set rather than at the old cord, since a damaged cord can be hard to read, and match the outline.
Right-angle plugs exist for a reason
If the set is wall mounted, a straight cord forces the panel away from the wall by an inch or more and puts a permanent bend at the connector. An angled plug removes both problems. It is the same electrical part; only the moulding differs, and it costs about the same.
Do not reuse a cord with a damaged jacket
Nicks, crushed sections and any exposed conductor mean the cord is finished. This is the one category where we will not sell you a repair; a replacement cord is inexpensive and a compromised mains cable is not worth the risk in any circumstance.
