How to work out the USB-C cable you actually need
Almost every USB-C cable looks the same and almost none of them do the same job. One will charge a laptop at full speed and refuse to carry video; another will show a 4K signal and trickle-charge a phone. The label on the bag is usually no help, because the part that matters is printed in a spec sheet nobody reads at the counter. This is the short version we give people on Eldridge Street when they arrive holding the cable that came in the box and a device that will not charge.
Watts first, then data, then video
Start with power, because it is the one that stops a device working rather than merely annoying you. A cable rated at 60W will run most phones and small laptops; 100W covers the majority of full-size laptops; 240W exists for the machines that ask for it. Only after the wattage is settled does the data rate matter, and only after that does video. A cable that satisfies all three is a different and more expensive object than one that satisfies the first.
Length costs you signal, not just money
Every extra foot of copper is a small tax on signal integrity. For charging alone the tax is irrelevant and a ten foot cable is a convenience. For high-refresh video or fast data it is not, and past a certain length passive cables simply stop working reliably. If you need distance and bandwidth at the same time, that is the point at which an active cable or a different connector becomes the honest answer.
The connector is the part that fails
Cables almost never fail in the middle. They fail where the cable meets the plug, because that is where the bending happens, and a moulded strain relief is the single best predictor of how long one lasts. Braided jackets look reassuring and mostly are, but a braided cable with a hard transition into the connector will still die in the same place, just more slowly.

What it costs
Across usb cables and hubs at HnH Tech prices currently run from $17.99 to $49.99. In usb cables and hubs that spread is mostly build quality and pack size rather than brand name: the cheapest option on this shelf is a reasonable place to start, and the dearest earns the difference in daily use rather than on the specification sheet.

The table below pulls the published figures off the 6 usb cables and hubs listings above so they can be compared without opening six tabs. A dash means the manufacturer of that usb cables and hub did not state the figure, not that the item lacks it, because HnH Tech does not fill those gaps with estimates.
